He was a Painter-in-Attendance and was awarded the honored Gold Belt. He specialized in the subjects of birds and flowers as well as melons and fruit. Although he used light colors in painting, his works were still quite naturalistic.This leaf from the album “Collected Sung and Yuan Paintings” shows a blossoming tuberose plant gracefully curving up from below. Its fragrance has attracted a butterfly, which approaches from the left. The flower and butterfly were done with extremely fine outlines that were then filled with colors. The snow-white petals stand out against the emerald-green leaves, further suggesting the subtle fragrance of the elegant blossoms.The signature of the artist is hidden unobtrusively in the lower right corner.
