It was not known precisely when he lived. As an official during the Posterior Shu, he was responsible for paintings of the stars and astronomy. In 965, after the defeat of Shu, he followed the Shu emperor to Sung. He became a court academy painter, and was skillful in the rendition of birds and flowers, and Buddhist and Taoist figures.On the left edge of this album leaf are inscribed the characters “Yuan-chang”. It appears as if this were added later, yet the style of the composition seems ancient and has the flavor of a Sung dynasty court painting.
