Working in a rich and archaic manner, he was one of the most important painters in the Li Ch'eng and Kuo Hsi tradition of the Yüan dynasty.In addition to chess, painting, and calligraphy, the art of playing the zither was one of the leisurely past-times of the scholar. Since antiquity, it has been one of the essential elements in the life of scholars, which is why it is seen so often in Chinese painting. A Ming dynasty text states that the sound of the zither complements those of rushing water and wind in the pines. The scene shown here is an idealized visualization of this concept.
