In poetry, He studied that of Li Po; in calligraphy, that of Wang Hsi-chih; and in landscape painting, that of Kuo Hsi. His painting and calligraphy were beautifully elegant, much in the manner of other Yüan artists. This letter in running script was written to the Confucian scholar Wu Chi-shih in Soochow. The style is elegant and pure. The use of the brush and the structure for the characters all reveal the influence of Chao Meng-fu, but Chao's use of a rounded brush was more elegant. Chu's brush was not as rounded, so his style is unlike the curving harmony of Chao's. This work is from Traces by Yüan Calligraphers.
