Four hunters are seen on horseback wearing long robes with round collars and narrow sleeves. With daggers at their waists, each is mounted so that he can command his horse with his left hand and have the falcon perched on his right arm ready for the hunt. The hunters appear to have come together from different places, as if to exchange their experiences on the hunt. Draped over the saddle of the horse at the right is a dead hare with traces of blood fresh from the kill. The shaved heads and facial hair of the figures along with the groomed manes of the horses and the plumage of the falcons have all been rendered with exceptional skill and in a very lifelike manner. This work has been traditionally attributed to Hu K'uei, a member of the Khitan people active approximately from the 9th to 10th centuries. Known for his skill at rendering scenery on the steppes and horses with figures, he became famous for this subject matter.(20061206) 研究性论着: 胡瓌,范阳(河北涿县)人,或做山后契丹人,约活动于九、十世纪之间。精于描绘契丹之人马,凡帐棚、车辆、射猎器用、生活杂物及牲畜犬马,都形容备尽。本幅描写契丹族人,携鹰出猎之情景,人物着典型契丹族之衣冠,其猎鹰、座骑亦具特色。四只猎鹰中,三只可能是不同花色的海东青。鹫鹰科及隼科之鸟类,善猎者有数种,其中以海东青为极品,产地即在契丹之领域中,以善猎天鹅而闻名。马匹似有「裂耳犁鼻」之状,据云是当时契丹(辽金)人养育马匹的特殊方式:「…..谓鼻不破裂,则气盛冲肺。耳不裂,则风传而不闻音声…..」(注 1)。胡瓌喜用狼毫笔,借其挺健之笔毫绘制精致之作品。本幅即其精描细写之佳作,与院藏胡「回猎图」之画风及尺寸大小均相似,原属同一组之作 ,皆曾经宋徽宗收藏,画幅上遗有「宣龢」半印。(林柏亭) 注 1:董逌,(广川画跋),卷四,书胡瓌番马图,《钦定四库全书》,(台北:商务印书馆),813-页482。
