The coloring is simple and straightforward, in which light and dark areas of colors and ink tones delineate the front and back, creating a sense of volume and depth. The thorns have the “dragged-branch” quality of his father’s style, but with a more subtle effect. Areas of snow have been left blank with slight additions of white pigment to set off the colors of the berries and feathers, adding warmth and liveliness to the hues. The brushwork throughout the work is free and easy, much in the coarser manner of Ma Lin. Although fine brushwork is found in the rendering of the birds, the brush is still loose in the “sketching ideas” style.(20101015)
