He was one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming. A cloud-skirted peak rises in the center of the composition. To the left a waterfall emerges from the dark recesses between two vertical cliffs. A scholar, dwarfed by the immense mountain, sits on a river bank in the valley leisurely viewing the waterfall and listening to the wind in the pines. The signature “Wen Pi” appears in the lower left corner of the inscription. It is said that Wen signed his name as such until he was 39, after which he used “Wen Cheng-ming.” Both signature and style here thus suggest a date around 1510, when he was 39.
