They were famous for their sagacity and remonstrating the emperor and for responding to the people. The painter attempts to reconstruct the settings of the period and includes an inscription in standard script about their deeds. As a text-and-image record, it was meant to allow later viewers to "learn from pictures" and "use the past to teach about the present". The handscroll with ruled-line scenery of buildings is occupied by figures. Though the composition is summary, the style of brushwork is generally unlike that of Yüan artists. Wang Chen-p'eng was a master of ruled-line painting whose lines were extremely lively and meticulous.
