The fungus plant is one of the most important herbs in the search for the elixir of immortality. As a result, picking so-called "spirit" fungus is a commonly seen subject in Taoist art. In this painting, an immortal is holding a large peach and a basket full of fungus is suspended from a hoe slung over the shoulder. A crane appears behind the figure. The painting is done on silk as coarse as gauze, and the brushwork of the underlying preliminary sketch is still evident. In the Ming Dynasty (13680-1644), artists of Che School often depicted subjects popular in folk art. This is a good example. Because this style did not exist in the Five Dynasties, the label must be in error.
