At age 16, he was appointed to serve in the Academy of Painting in Szechwan. He learned from Tiao Kuang-yin, T'eng Ch'ang-yu, Li Sheng and some other masters, but Huang Ch'üan was able to establish his own unique style.Several spot-neck doves busy themselves in the countryside. Two of them are flying while the other three stroll by the bamboo grove. This delightful painting conveys a happy scene of contentment in nature full of activities. The painter so much emphasized on the observation of the shapes, and spirit of birds. He did not neglect to draw from life even to the minutest details of feathers. This painting is traditionally attributed to Huang Ch'üan.There is a painting entiltled Bamboo, Rocks, and Doves by a Sung artist in our collection, bearing a close resembrance to this Huang's picture in the arrangement of compositional elements.
