He watches two white geese swimming in a lotus pond as a servant stands behind him. The winding railing is surrounded by grasses. Though this work bears no seal or signature of the artist, it has been attributed to Ma Yüan. The figures, clothing, bark, axe-cut texturing, and even the coloring all differ from those of Ma. The style of Ma Yüan and Hsia Kuei was revived in 15th-century Ming dynasty. This work reveals the style of this era. As shown here, anonymous works were often ascribed to the founders of the style they reveal. The artist here has captured the sense of space, the twisting pine, and visage of Wang studying geese.
