He received his chih-shih civil service degree in 1649 and went on to serve as Assistant Provincial Commissioner. A skilled painter of birds-and-flowers as well as insects-and-grasses, his casual brushwork was still able to capture the varied appearances of his subjects. Depicted in this painting are pomegranate blossoms, oleander, day lilies, and other flowers associated with the fifth lunar month. These summer blossoms are accompanied by decorative rocks. Ch’en has employed both the “boneless” method of ink washes as well as the outline method filled with colors for rendering the different flowers to give a refined and sophisticated feel to the entire work.
