He received the chin-shih civil service degree in 1733 and, because of his academic achievements and extensive learning, was summoned to the court of the Ch’ien-lung emperor to assist with the compilation of the imperial art catalogues – Shih-chu pao-chi, Mi-tien chu-lin, and His-ch’ing ku-chien. The Ch’ien-lung emperor wrote a poem about ancient cedars and commissioned this work by Tung Pang-ta. The architectural part of this painting, the Li-tsao Hall, is meticulously executed in the kung-pi outline style with ruled-lines as well as splendidly and gorgeously colored. All this seems to have been done to conform to the tastes of the inner court. The cedar trees painted in the spontaneous hsieh-i style, however, demonstrate Tung Pang-ta’s true brush.
