(20120714) 内容简介(英文): China’s Four Divine Creatures are the “Green Dragon,” “White Tiger,” “Red Bird,” and “Black Tortoise,” representing east, west, south, and north, respectively. Research shows their imagery became popular on ritual architecture and vessels of the late Western Han and Wang Mang Interregnum. Gradually used as funerary decorative motifs, they symbolized in microcosm a boundless expansion of the universe. This rubbing shows the Red Bird originally engraved in lines. Though the subject is imaginary, it still appears lively and animated, fully representing the outstanding workmanship of Han dynasty craftsmen. The rubbing comes from the original stone engraving at Anhanli in Eastern Qufu, Shandong. This work was donated by Mr. Yeh Kung-ch’ao.(20120714)
