Variations to the layers of space add to the delight of the scenery as well. This imperial garden features tall pines and many flowers, creating for a verdant and shady scene. In the square is a person riding a white steed with an imperial consort shown in profile about to get on a horse. Groups of palace ladies are also in attendance. Latter Collection of the Fisherman-Recluse at Tiao River from the Southern Song is a poem that reads, “In verdant splendor of longing for an imperial meeting at Changsheng Palace, he mounts a horse before the building with concubines in attendance. Still searching for the ruler in looking back, she hesitatingly gets on the golden saddle in longing.” This work therefore might illustrate the story of the Tang emperor Minghuang and his famous concubine Yang Guifei on a trip to the imperial gardens. Although originally attributed to the Five Dynasties artist Guo Zhongshu, the style here is of the Southern Song instead.(20101015) 内容简介(英文): This painting depicts figures and horses in a palace garden. The architecture is rendered in the finely-detailed, ruled lines of the "boundary painting" technique. Figures and horses are touched in with mineral white pigment and are so fine as to be barely identifiable. Two figures are shown on horseback, each surrounded by a group of palace ladies. Behind them two figures carry large round "palace fans". Additional groups of attendants watch from a distance. The label strip for this album leaf attributes it to Kuo Chung-shu of the 10th century, but the style is that of the Southern Sung. The painting is a leaf in the album Sung-jen ho-pi hua.
