He became known as one of the Four Masters of the Ming. This painting includes such scenic sites around Soochow as T’ien-p’ing Mountain, Lion Mountain, Stone Lake, Ling-yen Mountain, Tiger Hill, Chih-hsing Mountain, and Lake T’ai. Shen Chou based this work on his own experiences traveling around his home in Soochow. Taking the essence of the sites, he rendered them using his mature brushwork. Thus, in addition to recording specific places, Shen also took liberty with them to create an overall style and composition. 内容简介(英文): The Scenery around SoochowShen Chou (1427-1509)Ming Dynasty Shen Chou (style name Ch’i-nan, sobriquets Shih-t’ien and Pai-shih-weng) was a native of Ch’ang-chou in Kiangsu. An accomplished scholar, he was an able poet, essayist, and calligrapher as well as an excellent painter. Although Shen Chou is best known for his landscapes, he was also talented in depicting flowers, fruits, vegetables, birds, and figures in ink. He has been proclaimed as one of the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty. This long handscroll represents the actual sights in the countryside surrounding Soochow. If we compare Shen Ch’ou’s painting with a map of the area, we can locate almost all of the sites. For example Hu-ch’iu-shan (Tiger hill), the Hu-shu Gate, Mt. T’ien-p’ing, Mt. Chih-hsing, Shih-shan (Lion Mountain), Mt. Ho, Heng-t’eng Township, Mu-tu Township, Mt. Ling-yen, Mt. Shang-fang, Shih-hu (Sone Lake), the Hsü Pass, Kuang-fu, and Lake T’ai can all be found on the accompanying map. Thus we can trace the itinerary of the artist on his travels. The map is reproduced from a Ch’ing Dynasty Gazetteer of Soochow.
