The painting is signed "Tzu-chao"--Sheng Mou's style name--but since this painting differs considerably from Sheng Mou's other works, the signature may be only a later addition.Sheng Mou's landscapes, portraits, and flower-and-bird paintings initially resembled those of his teacher Ch'en Lin, but as his technique matured he developed his own style. Originally from Lin-an in Chekiang, he later moved to Wei-t'ang in Chia-hsing in the same province.
