A man of broad and profound character, he was skilled at poetry and calligraphy, and especially gifted at painting. In his works, the forms have a quality of elegant naivete. He wielded the brush with force and bluntness, using rich, thick ink. His works convey a quality of forceful plainness as well as an abundantly archaic flavor. Shen Chou became known as one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming. This is a painting of a foreground scene with a lofty old tree, below which sits a scholar fishing on a level bank. The dots of leaves and brushwork are extremely sharp. The moist mountain peak and rocks on the opposite shore blend together, and several horizontal brushstrokes hugging the bank represent water ripples. The painting was done on a small fan speckled with gold leaf, thus revealing the plain yet complete brushwork and the fluid quality of the ink. Shen Chou has combined elements of the styles of Yuan (1279-1368) artists Huang Kung-wang and Wu Chen and created a variation of them.
