However, he spent most of his life in Nanking. During the reign of the Wan-li Emperor (1573-1620), he became famous as a painter and calligrapher. His ink line-drawings were especially fine, and his paintings of Buddhist figure subjects were known for their unconventional, even weird forms. His landscape paintings also exhibit great originality. This album leaf is taken from an album depicting the twenty-five great deities mentioned in the Surangama Sutra. These deities are each believed to possess one of the twenty-five supernatural powers of omnipresence. The deity represented here, Virudhaka, possesses the power of earth. In this painting, the horses are depicted in an exaggerated manner. The brushwork is nervously modulated, the colors are bright and elegant. The entire composition is permeated with an archaic quality.
